Five years ago, Yemi Alade burst into the Nigerian music scene with her smash hit ‘Johnny”. Since then, she has gone on to win awards and become one of the biggest musicians on the continent.

This 2018, Yemi Alade earned a spot on the Forbes 30 Under 30 Africa list, for her contribution and excellence as an African artist. On that note, we have curated 5 inspiring things you should know about the self-proclaimed ‘Mama Africa’.

1. Yemi Alade shares a Yoruba and Igbo ethnicity

Yemi Eberechi Alade comes from a multi-ethnic background. Her mother, Helen Uzoma is an Igbo woman while her father, James Alade, a former police commissioner, was of Yoruba origins.

2. She won the 2009 edition of the Peak Talent Show

Although Yemi didn’t get her big break until 2013, she was consistent and stayed true to her work. In 2009, she won the Peak Talent show shortly after which she released her first single ‘Fimisile.

3. Her song ‘Johhny’ mirrors Wizkid and L.A.X’s smash hit ‘Caro’

It’s not every time we get to hear women sing about their love interests as good as Yemi did with Johhny. If you listen to the lyrics of both songs, you’ll see how Yemi perfectly drew inspiration from ‘Caro’ without necessarily copying the song.

4. Yemi is a feminist

Speaking to Fader Magazine in 2016, she particularly expressed how passionate she was about human rights -especially women’s rights. Yemi has always pandered to women’s rights and empowerment in her songs. Also, you would notice, her lyrics call out philandering men that many women can relate to.

5. She is one of the few Nigerian artistes to record French versions of their songs

Not even Tiwa Savage or Wizkid have done this. How can you reach an audience who speak a different language than you? Yemi solved this problem when she released French versions of her smash hits, Johnny and Kissing.
